the word of god
How is it that we can call the Scriptures the actual “Word of God”? In order to help us answer questions like this, the Church gives us a resource that systematically explains the Faith - the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). (You can read more about the origin and structure of the Catechism here.)
CCC #120 explains that “It was by the apostolic Tradition that the Church discerned which writings are to be included in the list of the sacred books. This complete list is called the canon of Scripture.”
But why believe the Church’s discernment? Again, the Catechism helps us understand: “The Church is… the place ‘where the Spirit flourishes.’” CCC #749 “The one mediator, Christ, established and ever sustains here on earth his holy Church, the community of faith, hope and charity, as a visible organization through which he communicates truth and grace to all men.”
CCC #771
This year we will focus our attention on Jesus, as He is revealed to us in the Gospels, particularly the Gospel of Matthew.
“The Gospels are the heart of all the Scriptures ‘because they are our principal source for the life and teachings of the Incarnate Word, our Savior.’” CCC #126 They reveal “his acts, teachings, Passion and glorification, and his Church’s beginnings under the Spirit’s guidance.”
